Why Sydney Whale Whisperer Should Be Your Next Sydney Whale Watching Experience
Whale watching from the middle of the city
Looking for something unforgettable to do on the weekend? Whale watching in Sydney is a seasonal highlight for locals and visitors alike, and one of the easiest ways to do it starts in Darling Harbour. Sydney Whale Whisperer runs a whale watching cruise from King Street Wharf between May and November.
Harbour first, then the ocean
The cruise leaves from King Street Wharf 6 in Darling Harbour, so it starts right in the centre of the city. To reach open water it heads out past the Harbour Bridge and the Opera House, which gives you the harbour views on the way to the whales.
Once it clears the harbour, the boat heads out into the ocean to look for the humpback whales that migrate along the coast. The cruise runs for three hours, so allow a morning or an afternoon for it rather than slotting it between other plans.
The boat and the crew
Sydney Whale Whisperer’s boat is Port Venture, and the operator describes it as wheelchair friendly, with space to move around and several spots to watch from. The crew share their local knowledge of the whales and the water along the way.
Getting to the wharf
This is the part that catches people out. The departure point is King Street Wharf 6, 6 Lime Street, Darling Harbour. It is not Wharf 6 at Circular Quay, so check you are heading to Darling Harbour.
- Train: Wynyard and Town Hall stations are both a short walk away
- Parking: Sydney Whale Whisperer lists paid parking at Wilson Parking on Shelley Street, Secure Parking on Kent Street and the Barangaroo Reserve car park
- Details: the operator’s departure information page has the full directions
Booking the whale cruise
The whale watching cruise runs in the May to November season, when humpbacks pass Sydney on their migration. Times, availability and online booking are on that page, along with the operator’s whale guarantee.
If you are in Sydney outside whale season, or want a second thing to do on the water the same weekend, the harbour ferries are the easy option. Our guide to the best way to see Sydney Harbour covers which route to take.
