Callala Beach is on the wrong side of the bay to be famous, which is the entire appeal. It runs for kilometres along the northern shore and looks back south across the water at Beecroft Peninsula, so you get the Jervis Bay view rather than standing in it.
Most of the traffic on this side is people who own a house here or are staying in one. On a weekday out of season you can walk a long way and see almost nobody, which is not a claim anyone can make about Hyams Beach any more.
It is one of only four beaches around Jervis Bay with a designated off-leash area, on the standard Shoalhaven hours: 4pm to 8am from 1 October to 30 April, 3pm to 10am from 1 May to 30 September. Two stretches are excluded and they are worth knowing, because neither is obvious from the sand. Dogs are prohibited between Parkes Crescent and Centre Street, and at the southern end of the beach south of the Beach Road car park at Myola.
The sunsets are the other reason to come. Facing south down a wide bay, you get the colour across the whole sky rather than in one direction, and in winter that lands right in the middle of the off-leash window.
