Nelsons Beach sits on the Vincentia side of Jervis Bay, just south of Plantation Point, and you drop onto it down a timber stairway through the dune rather than walking straight off a car park.
It is one of only four beaches around Jervis Bay with a designated off-leash area, which is the reason people drive past closer sand to get here. The hours are the standard Shoalhaven ones and they run overnight rather than through the day: 4pm to 8am from 1 October to 30 April, and 3pm to 10am from 1 May to 30 September. Outside those windows the dog is on a lead.
The thing to get right is that the beaches either side are not the same. Blenheim Beach, the small cove to the south, is a dogs prohibited area. Collingwood Beach round to the north is prohibited too, although the cycleway running behind it is an on-leash walk and a good one. The off-leash sand is Nelsons itself, and the boundaries are not marked on the sand.
