Tweed Heads

At the northernmost point of New South Wales you’ll find Tweed Heads, a town known for its surfing, shopping, tourism and culinary scene. It is often referred to as one of the most underrated holiday destinations in the state, and for good reason! A versatile location, there are a range of sights to see and activities to enjoy from rainforest river cruises and fishing charters, to beach walks and whale watching. When visiting, be sure to keep an eye on the events calendar to stay up to date with what’s happening in the area.

Minjungbal Aboriginal Cultural Centre

The Minjungbal people are the traditional owners of the land in Tweed Heads. They belong to the larger Bundjalung people, who originally inhabited the land surrounding the Tweed estuary. You can learn more about the traditional owners by visiting the Minjungbal Aboriginal Cultural Centre. It is located in the home of late elder Aunty Margaret Kay, on the Tweed River, and offers exhibits showcasing the traditional lifestyle and pristine natural environment that was apparent prior to European arrival.

Listen as Aboriginal guides educate on history, culture and sacred Aboriginal sites in the area. A particularly special piece of Indigenous history can also be experienced when doing the Walk on Water Loop, taking you through the mangroves to Bora Ring – a rare surviving circle of raised earth that was used in community get-togethers.

Tweed Eco Cruises

Ecotourism is a massive focus in Tweed Heads, as locals agree that the incredible natural environment that surrounds them should be protected and promoted. Tweed Eco Cruises is a family owned and operated business doing just that. Their cruises are designed to showcase the region’s history, nature and seafood with sustainable operations and minimal impact on the environment. Farm & Co

Tweed Heads is very popular amongst foodies, for its focus on fresh, locally sourced produce. From farm to sea, the area has it all. Amongst the many incredible places to eat in the area, Farm & Co is a dining experience and true representation of the authentic culinary produce in Tweed Heads. This family owned farm uses organic farming practices and a paddock to plate philosophy.

“We grow food using sustainable practices. We aim to reduce food milage, our carbon footprint and don’t use harmful chemicals. We believe this is the best way to grow and support healthy communities” – Michele Stephens (current owner).

This is showcased on the Farm & Co menu, with weekly lunch specials starring seasonal produce straight from the farm. They also have a set breakfast menu and are open on Wednesday to Sunday from 8am until 2pm. For coffee and cake, they are open on Monday to Sunday from 8am until 2pm. They also have a farm stall on Monday to Sunday from 8am until 3pm.

What makes this farm to plate cafe an experience are the other activities that can be enjoyed whilst you are there. Wander through the sunflower fields and take some iconic photos for your Instagram profile, explore the farm feeding the pigs and chickens while you’re there, and visit the farm store for fresh produce you can take home.
